Box Truck Crashes Into Pole On Sunrise Highway, 2 Hurt: Police

The truck left the roadway and struck the center median and a pole near Exit 50A early Sunday, Suffolk police said.

SAYVILLE, NY — A 17-year-old driver and his 20-year-old passenger were hospitalized after a box truck left Sunrise Highway and struck the center median and a pole early Sunday morning, Suffolk police said.

The teen was driving a 2008 Isuzu box truck westbound on Sunrise Highway, just west of Exit 50A, when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the median and pole at about 5:45 a.m. Aug. 9, police said.

The Sayville Fire Department said crews responding to the crash found the heavily damaged truck with one occupant heavily trapped inside the cab.

Firefighters used an assortment of hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the trapped occupant from the vehicle, according to the department.

The driver and passenger were taken by Community Ambulance Company to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Suffolk County Police Emergency Services personnel also responded and assisted at the scene.

Fire department operations were conducted under the command of Sayville Fire Department Chief Ryan Quarte, officials said.

Police said Sunrise Highway remained closed while crews worked to remove the truck.
