LI Man Rescued From Sinking Boat Charged With BWI: Police

The man was boating alone when his vessel struck an object and began sinking off Sayville, police said.

SAYVILLE, NY — A Patchogue man was charged with boating while intoxicated after police rescued him from a sinking vessel in the Great South Bay Tuesday night, Suffolk County Police said.

Christopher Carlson, 48, was operating a 2004 30-foot Grady-White boat in the Great South Bay off Sayville when the vessel struck an object in the water at about 9:20 p.m., police said.

Carlson, who was traveling alone, called 911 and reported that his boat was sinking, according to police.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded and removed Carlson from the vessel. Officers determined Carlson was intoxicated, police said.

Carlson was charged with operating a vessel while intoxicated and was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
