BAYPORT-BLUE POINT, NY — With a new school year approaching, Bayport-Blue Point students got an early look at their new surroundings during middle and high school orientation events this week.

Incoming sixth graders visited James Wilson Young Middle School for Locker Day on Aug. 26, while seventh and eighth graders also had an opportunity later in the day to locate and practice opening their new lockers.

Principal Patricia Westerlund welcomed students and introduced them to what they can expect from middle school. Students explored the building, found their classrooms and tackled one of the staples of starting middle school — figuring out their lockers.

Upper-grade student mentors were also on hand to answer questions and offer advice about making the most of the middle school experience.

The following day, members of the Class of 2030 got a head start on high school during Bayport-Blue Point High School's annual freshman orientation.

Principal Jamal Walcott welcomed the incoming ninth graders and introduced them to academic and extracurricular opportunities available at the school.

Students also heard from motivational speaker and wrestler Rohan Murphy, who shared his story of overcoming physical challenges and pursuing his goals. Murphy encouraged students to approach their own challenges with perseverance and determination.

Following the presentation, freshmen joined upperclassman BBP Connect peer mentors for guided tours of the high school. Students visited classrooms, became familiar with the building and asked questions about what to expect during their first year.

With lockers opened, classrooms located and questions answered, the district's newest middle and high school students are now preparing for the start of the school year.
