SAYVILLE, NY — A vehicle caught fire after crashing off the eastbound Sunrise Highway service road in Sayville early Wednesday morning, prompting a response from firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel, according to the Sayville Fire Department.
Firefighters were called to the service road at Lincoln Avenue, where they found a single vehicle off the roadway with an active fire in its engine compartment, the department said.
The vehicle's occupant had already been safely removed with assistance from Suffolk County police officers before firefighters arrived.
Sayville firefighters stretched a hose line and quickly extinguished the flames, bringing the situation under control, the department said.
Sayville Community Ambulance transported one person to an area hospital for further evaluation. The person's condition was not immediately available.
The operation was conducted under the command of Sayville Fire Department Chief Ryan Quarte.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
