Students of all ages across the Sayville School District showed up in their brightest attire for the STRIDES Glow Run at Sayville Middle School on October 21. The Glow Run demonstrated the connection between physical and mental health, showing students that taking care of their bodies also helps to take care of their minds. Students, faculty, staff, and community members enthusiastically dressed for the occasion, wearing neon outfits, glow sticks, stickers, temporary tattoos, ribbons, and even reflective face paint.
The event was a partnership between Jillian Makris, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, and Dr. Ryan Cox, Director of Physical Education, Health and Interscholastic Athletics. Student athletes, teams, and coaches joined in the run and served as role models for their younger peers.
"I'm so proud the Glow Run was such a hit with our entire school community," said Jillian Makris, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services. "The Sayville community has always been incredibly supportive of our students, and this evening was no exception. By showing students the relationship between their physical and mental health, we empower them to better care for their minds, bodies, and emotional wellbeing. It sets them up for success both in the classroom and beyond."
Upon arrival, attendees signed a Glow Run banner. Inflatable arches marked milestones in the run, the finish line arch decorated with bright streamers and lit with black lights. After the run, the event resembled a block party—older students handed out glow sticks to younger children. Attendees enjoyed shaved ices from a Kona Ice truck and snacks from the SEPTA table. Dominic Armano, principal of Lincoln Avenue Elementary school, served as DJ for the night. Dressed in a light-up hoodie and pants, he invited students to a dance floor decorated with balloons. As they danced into the evening, their glow sticks shone against the night.
STRIDES (Self-esteem, Trust, Resiliency, Independence, Diversity, Empathy, Strength) is Sayville School District's Social and Emotional Wellness initiative aiming to foster these core attributes which are "integral to personal happiness and success." First launched by Ms. Makris in the 2019-2020 school year, the program's success in helping students has made it a mainstay for the Sayville School District.
