As we speak, colleges have started to reopen for the fall 2026 semester where hundreds of thousands of young adult Americans are about to begin or return to juggle studying hard and having the time of their lives safely. As this takes place, parents need to know what coverage they should look into for their adventurous child.

Weezie Mullaly who runs the Weezie Mullaly GEICO agency on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers, says there is indeed some smart "back to college" coverage and incentives for families during this period.

"GEICO does offer a student away at school rating if child over 100 miles away without a car, and families should indeed inquire about those facts," said Mullaly. "The college student's driving status should be reviewed as their young one is away, and certain things may or not apply, but definitely worth looking into."

Ms. Mullaly also stresses that kids and drivers need to be vigilant about their surroundings now that summer slowdown has ended and there are students, walking, getting off buses and of course driving so cities and towns are seeing post-summer high activity.

"Drivers should exercise extra care, so it's best to review your commute to make sure your policy is properly rated," she says. "Review coverages and make sure all applicable discounts apply."

Mullaly also stresses that now is a good time to take the New York Defensive Driving Course, in order to take advantage of discounts and to reduce points on your driver's record. The course can be taken online or in person. Ms. Mullaly also says that people should consider bundling for better savings.
