Ben’s of Scarsdale is gaining a reputation for ingenuity with new marketing promotions surfacing each month. Looks like its kitchen is innovating too—a round meat knish has just been introduced. Its a side dish and is available at this time only at Ben’s Scarsdale location. (Ben’s has restaurants in seven locations in the U.S.A.). The meat knish is on display in the glass enclosure located at the takeout counter opposite the parking lot entrance.

It is priced at $3.49—the same amount charged for Ben’s popular square potato-filled knish—otherwise the two side dishes have little in common; their tastes being quite different as well as their shapes.

The round meat knish is made from: ground beef and ground turkey, and does not contain any potato (while the potato knish is 100-percent filled with potato). Before being ground, the meat knish is sautéed with:

  • Onions
  • Pepper
  • Garlic
  • Other spices

It is wrapped afterwards with a fluffy puff pastry and baked in an oven until it turns golden brown in color.

Potato knishes have been around for a long time. Mrs. Stahl’s knish shop in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn began selling them 80 years ago and before that, according to historian and author Laura Silver, they were distributed to mourners at funerals in Knysza, Poland and called “knysza.”

Ben’s of Scarsdale is preparing new promotional programs for September including “Family Football Sundays” in conjunction with showing Jets and Giants games on its television receivers. A “Real Meals Family style” takeout program will be introduced for couples or families valuing home cooked meals made with “real food” and Rosh Hashanah catering program information will be available toward the end of the month.

Ben’s of Scarsdale is located at 718 Central Park Avenue in Scarsdale, NY and has a large parking lot, 914-468-2367.
