Editor's note: Who doesn't like breakfast? Well, Somebody's Mom will occasionally go out to eat to find the best places for the most important meal of the day.
Scarsdale opened in 2006. Mela and I have been going there for breakfast since the beginning. From the busboys, waiters and waitresses to the cashiers, all have been loyal and long-standing employees. It says something about a restaurant when the staff is there year after year. The place is managed well and treats their employees well. This in turn benefits the customers by the happiness of the employees and their friendliness toward us.
Mela (my breakfast buddy) is definitely more health conscience than I am. I am more about the taste, rather than the health thing. No matter how hard she tries to convert me on certain dishes, I am not budging.

For instance, years ago, Mela enjoyed my homemade lasagna, exclaiming, “Why is it so good compared to mine?”
“Because I use real ricotta and real mozzarella cheese in mine and you use the fat-ree brand!” I said.

There is a big difference in taste when you use a no-fat anything. On the other hand, I converted a little bit. I always ordered rye toast, but Mela got me hooked on multi-grain toast (butter on the side, of course). We very rarely order a side of real bacon—she only eats soy or turkey—and never sausages, heaven forbid. Both of us are big on vegetables, which work well in omelets. When you share dishes, which Mela and I do, it helps if you share the same tastes.
We arrived on a pleasant Sunday morning at 9:05 a.m. at the Scarsdale Metro Deli. Not an empty booth in site! Packed already and the day had just begun. What does that tell you already? We would have loved to sit in our usual booth, but instead squeezed into one of those little free-standing tables—at least it was by the window.
Being regulars at the Metro Deli, we usually don’t even look at the menu anymore. But this Sunday, Mela and I decided to change up are usual breakfast order.
Metro Deli serves good waffles, which we split, so no need to order them. Today we decided to good a different route by ordering the multi-grain pancakes and a Swiss, broccoli, tomato and onion omelet with home fries. Mela gave in to an order of real bacon with the pancakes, only if the bacon was cooked well done, very crispy.
Metro’s coffee was good as usual, and we were offered a refill without asking. The omelet was cooked to perfection and was a very generous portion. Home fries were great, as well as their multi-grain toast. Bacon was crispy enough to snap.
OK, all was good till the pancakes. I tried the healthy multi-grain pancakes and one word on for them—PASS. We both agreed they were mealy, grainy and undercooked but with a hint of cinnamon flavor. I guess I am not ready for healthy pancakes just yet. This is not a complaint but just a comment on their syrup, they use those pre-measured little packs of syrups that are way too sweet. Real maple syrup in a pourer would make for a nice addition to any pancake, French toast or waffle entree.
All in all, we love Metro Deli. The price was right at $24.60 without tip. In addition, I always bring back a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll for my hubby and my daughter, Mia, from the Metro—they love them. And we love you, Metro. See you soon!
