Opera in an Hour! Great Opera Choruses

The New Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. John T. King, will present its season finale – “Great Opera Choruses” on Sunday, May 6 at 4 PM, in the sanctuary of Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, located at 6 Greenacres Avenue, Scarsdale. The 48 member, all auditioned chorus will be accompanied by a professional orchestra.

 A “greatest hits” list of opera choruses has been compiled by Maestro King and includes the beloved chorus from Verdi’s Nabucco, Va, pensiero (“Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) “The Chorus of the Wedding Guests” (D’immenso giubilo) from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, “Easter Hymn” (Inneggiano) from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, “Bridal Chorus” (Treulich Gefürht) from Wagner’s Lohengrin and

Not wanting to overlook the popular operetta, often associated with Gilbert and Sullivan, Dr. King has programmed several favorites from The Mikado, Iolanthe and The Pirates of Penzance, to add variety to this exceptional program.

 Other works on the program include the booming Verdi classic “The Anvil Chorus” from Il Trovatore and the “Triumphal Scene” from Aida, the hauntingly beautiful “Final Chorus” from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, “With drooping wings”, in addition to choruses from operas by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Gounod, Händel and Rossini.

Ticket prices are $25 for Preferred Seating (limited quantity available); $20 for General Admission and, for Seniors and Students, a discounted General Admission ticket for $15.
