The Greenburgh Town Board met with Chuck Conroy of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee at a work session on January 28th. There are state grants available to local governments for education outreach. Many of the pedestrian accidents that have been taking place around the region could be due to different factors: driver distraction, pedestrians walking at night with dark clothing, not using crosswalks, etc.

We plan to apply for education grants in May and are thinking of different ideasto make our town safer. In addition to the education grants, we’re moving forward on plans to build new sidewalks around the town. The police will be purchasing digital speed boards to advise motorists when they are speeding. A traffic safety committee is being formed. We’re going to be working with the schools to educate students about pedestrian safety. The police are reviewing speed limits and may recommend reductions in speed limits on certain streets. And, much more. Your thoughts are welcome. The discussion we had with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee was very productive. You might be interested in watching the video link. Our community has experienced too many accidents in recent months- 8 pedestrian accidents, 3 pedestrian fatalities. Ardsley is mourning the tragic passing of a student and parent who lost their lives last week due to a motorist driving the wrong way off of 287 in Tarrytown.

We are going to work very hard to make our community safer and are discussing initiatives that we can take short term and long term. I am also going to share this video with other municipal officials from around the county - hoping that every local, county and state government will take action steps to reduce accidents.

Thank you again for the invitation to present on GTSC grant programs. I thought the meeting went very well and I hope you and the Town Board did as well.

I wanted to ask that you make a small change to the PowerPoint that I left on the laptop the other day. Unfortunately, I listed our website with an old website address. Within the last month, we changed our URL to be trafficsafety.ny.gov. It is no longer Safeny.ny.gov which is listed in the PowerPoint. If you haven’t already shared the file, could you please update slide number 4 with the proper address.

Also, I am working on the list of comparable programs for you and the other Town Board Members. As I said during the meeting, we do not currently have a directly comparable grant to what may come from Greenburgh so I’m trying to find programs that could provide you some guidance.

I did meet with Westchester Medical Center yesterday morning who is a grantee of ours specializing in pedestrian safety education for elementary and senior age audiences. Angela Katz, the Grant Manager, should be reaching out to you soon.
