Scarsdale Students Take First Place in Area MATHCOUNTS Competition

This is the fifth year in a row Scarsdale Middle School finished first.

For the fifth year in a row, the Scarsdale Middle School’s MATHCOUNTS team finished first in the regional competition, the school announced. The victory also marked the team’s sixth first place finish in the past seven years.

Eric Wei (Butler 7) finished first in the competition and Jonathan Lin (Butler 8) finished second.

Also placing highly were Zachary Wang (Popham 7), Deyuan Li (Cooper 7) and Max Zhao (Fountain 8), who all finished in the top 12.

Next up is the State competition, where the team will defend the State title it won last year for the first time.

The team is coached by Popham 8 math teacher Steve Weiss and Popham 7 math teacher Heidi Kaplan.
