Scarsdale Welcomes New Firefighters

The fire department held a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday.

Scarsdale welcomed its newest on Wednesday. The three probationary firefighters attended an official swearing in ceremony at Village Hall on March 28.

Michael Decker, Jason Abrahamsen and Brian Becker were sworn in by Village Clerk Donna Conkling, according to

Cain said the newbies will "begin an intensive 17-week training program at the Westchester County Career Fire Academy at the Department of Emergency Services in Valhalla."

The three will start their training on April 2 and "will return to the Scarsdale Fire Department as Nationally Certified Level II firefighters in late July," the chief said.

The chief said the three come from diverse backgrounds. Decker was a volunteer firefighter in Purchase and Becker, a U.S. Marine who served two tours in Iraq, was a volunteer firefighter in Mamaroneck. Abrahamsen was an insurance claims analyst before joining the Scarsdale Fire Department, Cain said.

Village staff, along with members of the Scarsdale Fire Department, attended the swearing in ceremony. Retired Scarsdale Firefighter John Daly, also a former Marine, attended the ceremony "as a show of Marine support" for Becker, the chief said.
