Six Car Break-Ins Reported in a One Night in Scarsdale

An unknown suspect entered unlocked cars – all in the same neighborhood – overnight on July 29 and 30, taking electronics and cash. 

The Scarsdale Police Department is investigating the overnight break-ins of six motor vehicles in the same neighborhood early last week.

Officials say that the suspect is a tall, light-skinned male.

Each of the cars that broken into had been left unlocked in the driveway.

Cash, a digital camera, GPS units were stolen from the unlocked vehicles in the area of Stonehouse, Crane and Popham Roads between the night of July 29, and the early hours of July 30. 

The first call came in from 5 Stonehouse Road, after an observant neighbor witnessed a tall, light skinned male enter two of his neighbor’s, located at 6 Stonehouse Road, vehicles around 2 a.m.  Police notified residents of the break in, and the residents found that their cars appeared to be ransacked, and $20 and change was taken from one of the vehicles. The husband and wife had left both of their cars unlocked that night.

Police contacted other homeowners on the street, prompting them to check their vehicles, officials said.

After receiving a call around 2:15 a.m., a husband and wife living at 12 Stonehouse Road filed a similar report. Their cars appeared to be ransacked, but nothing was missing. A white and powdery handprint was found on the right rear passenger door. This vehicle was also left unlocked by the owners.

A resident of 42 Crane Road, located less than half a mile away from the residences on Stonehouse Road, called the police around 8:30 am on the morning of July 30th, to report that an unknown person had entered his unlocked vehicle the evening prior. No damage was done to the vehicle, but his Tom Tom GPS, and $3 in coins were stolen from the car.

Another report came in that morning around 9 a.m., from a woman who stated that both her father’s and her own vehicle had been unlawfully entered. The two vehicles were located in the driveway of the woman’s parent’s home, located at 64 Popham Road. Police officers believe the unknown person entered the vehicles after 8 p.m. The reporting party claimed that her GPS and digital camera were stolen from her car. Her father advised that his GPS, along with $25 and change were taken from his vehicle.

A 57-year-old woman, with a residence of 22 Crane Road reported to the SPD at 9:15 a.m. that her Toyota had been ransacked after 6 p.m. the night before. The vehicle had been unlocked when the owner left it in the driveway. No damage was done to the car, but $15 in rolls of quarters was taken.

The resident of 32 Crane Road reported a similar incident. On the morning of the 30th, the woman found the items in her car astray, yet nothing had been taken. The owner also stated that she did not see or hear any unusual activity over the course of the night.
