The teachers stole the show last night at the Fourth Annual Teacher Idol fundraiser.

A full house crowded the Junior-Senior High School's auditorium on Wednesday, April 4.

A total of 45 staff members competed in the singing competition, according to Teacher Art Nelson, one of the show's coordinators. Last night it was the group that did the Bee Gee's "Night Fever," teachers Jonathan Hansonbrook, Dan Rendich, Carol Condos and Steve Rubenstein that won the Idol contest.

All proceeds from the show went to the Nancy Rose Tannenbaum Scholarship Fund. This year, the fundraiser brought in close to $2,000.

"She was a special ed teacher here, who passed away suddenly over the winter break in 2008," Nelson said. "She was a very fun loving teacher. She loved to sing and sang to her special ed kids...she sang in her car...she was quite a character."

After the devastating loss of their teacher and coworker, the school came together to put on the Teacher Idol event.

Nelson said the Idol event was teacher Norm Silverman's idea, and tragically, the technology teacher also passed away suddenly.

"He was a really funny guy and a great guy," Nelson said of his former coworker.

Teacher Idol now honors both of the beloved Edgemont teachers' memories.

"This event is really in their spirit and it's been special each time," he said.

"It's really a fun event," Nelson said. Going back to school after the Idol show is a great feeling and it's also a "great feeling to honor Nancy (and Norm) and to raise money."
