Tenth Annual Big Truck Day Returns

Local Scarsdale kids got hands-on experience with live trucks seen around town from the Scarsdale Highway Department and the Police and Fire Department.

Kids lined up in the back parking lot of the Scarsdale Public Library yesterday to gain first-hand experience with trucks issued by the Highway Department as part of their 10th Annual Truck Day event.

“Every year for two weeks in May with cooperation from the Highway Department and the police and fire departments, we offer the kids the opportunity to climb into the trucks and look around," said Karen Zielinski, the library's head of Children's Library Services. "It’s our biggest program of the year, and it’s very popular—in the end, there’s the Good Humor ice cream truck for the kids. It’s educational, and it’s fun—the kids love the trucks, and this way, they get a hands-on experience with them.”

Pamela Jakubowicz, a Greenacres resident, said that Big Truck Day is a great way to welcome summer.

“The library has so many great programs, and this is one that starts off the summer—kids learn about the different trucks. They love to see them and climb in them, and they feel less intimidated by them,” said Jakubowicz.

Colby Mulvey, another Scarsdale resident who lives close to the library, found out about Big Truck Day through a friend at the very last minute.

“We missed it last year, so it’s our first time—my son loves the trucks and gets very excited and impatient!”said Mulvey.
