wvox radio w/ Kay Semenza, mom of Nobel Prize winner

2019 Nobel Prize

First, Happy Chinese Lunar New Year to our Chinese neighbors. And, a friendly reminder that there is a Lunar celebration at the Ardsley Community Center today from 2-4 PM. It's free and lots of fun! Sponsored by Ardsley's Multicultural Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Kay Semenza of Tarrytown was a single mom who did a great job balancing her life as a teacher and mom. Her son, Dr. Gregg Semenza, a 1974 Sleepy Hollow High School graduate, won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for groundbreaking work on how cells sense and adopt to changing levels of oxygen around them. Dr. Semenza credited his Sleepy Hollow biology teacher Rose Nelson for his commitment to science.

Yesterday I invited Kay Semenza to appear as a guest on my WVOX radio show. Kay provides listeners with tips on parenting. We learned about her son (his research project was initially rejected - he did not give up!). We discussed his outstanding biology teacher, Rose Nelson. Kay discusses her experiences at the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm. And, much more. A link to the radio interview is below.

I think that area schools should have a wall of honor for distinguished graduates at a prominent place in their schools This wall of honor would motivate students to work hard. Today's students can be tomorrow's Nobel Prize winners!
