2 Long Island Beaches Close After Lifeguard Bitten By Shark

Drones and lifeguards are expected to monitor the waters for potential dangers as beachgoers gather this holiday weekend.

MASTIC, NY — Two Long Island beaches were temporarily closed Sunday after a lifeguard was bitten by a shark, according to a statement from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

The closure affected Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches, park officials confirmed on Twitter.

"Notice for Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches: swimming has been suspended due to dangerous marine activity as of Sunday, July 3," Suffolk County Parks tweeted.

During a news conference held Sunday, Bellone confirmed a lifeguard was bitten. The lifeguard, identified as Zack Gallo, was bitten in the chest and the hand. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Bellone said he spoke to Gallo and the other man was "in good spirits."
