2 Woman Charged With Selling Illegal Fireworks On LI: Police

250 cases of fireworks, worth more than $100,000, were found at the store, police say.

MASTIC, NY — Two women were arrested at a Mastic store Friday and charged with selling illegal fireworks, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place at 1:55 p.m. at Smokes R Us on Poospatuck Lane. Responding to community complaints, Seventh Precinct crime section officers responded to the shop, where they saw signs on the door stating that fireworks were for sale, police said.

Police found 250 cases of fireworks on the shelves and in storage; the fireworks are valued at more than $100,000, officials said.

The owner of the store, Danielle Treadwell, 47, of Mastic, and the store manager, Althea Hatcher, 56, of West Babylon, were arrested and charged with illegal storage of explosives, a felony under New York State labor law, as well as and unlawfully dealing with fireworks and dangerous fireworks, police said.

Both were issued field appearance tickets and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date, police said.
