25 Poisoned By Carbon Monoxide After BBQ Used Indoors

MASTIC, NY — A total of 25 people were victims of carbon monoxide poisoning in Mastic Sunday after a charcoal barbecue was used to cook at a family party in a basement.

Suffolk County Police Seventh Precinct officers responded to a report of people unconscious at the home, located on Cumberland Street in Mastic, at approximately 9:05 p.m., police said.

Upon arrival, it was discovered there were people cooking at a family party with the charcoal barbecue in the basement of the home, police said.

All of the victims evacuated themselves from the home; 11 people were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, three additional victims transported themselves to local hospitals and the remainder of the victims were evaluated and treated by a doctor at the scene, police said.

The Brookhaven fire marshal and building inspectors were on scene and issued code violations, police said.

Members of the Mastic Fire Department and Mastic Rescue responded along with several other ambulance companies, police said.

Animals in the home are also believed to be fine, police said.
