SHIRLEY, NY — Two men were arrested in connection with taking part in an illegal speed contest on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley early Tuesday morning, Suffolk police said.
A Seventh Precinct patrol officer saw a 2019 Ford Mustang and a 2023 Dodge Charger competing in a speed contest on southbound William Floyd Parkway, at around 12:50 a.m., according to police.
The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, but both vehicles accelerated, and continued traveling southbound over the Smith Point Bridge, where they were stopped by additional police units, police said.
The drivers included a 22-year-old from Queens, and a 29-year-old from Lake Ronkonkoma, who were cited for unlawful speed contest, third-degree unlawful fleeing, and reckless driving, all misdemeanors, as well as multiple vehicle and traffic law violations, according to police.
Both were issued field appearance tickets and are scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
The vehicles were seized and will remain impounded as evidence and may be subject to forfeiture under local ordinance, police said.
