SHIRLEY, NY — Detectives are investigating the death of a man discovered dead inside a camper parked at the Southaven County Park in Shirley Sunday morning, Suffolk police said.
When officers arrived at the scene at 7:40 a.m., the man was non-responsive, according to police.
Detectives do not consider the death to be criminal in nature, police said.
They have not determined a cause of death.
His identity was not immediately released.
The death shocked campers staying at the park's campgrounds, News 12 reported.
Caitlin Rivera-Boward told the outlet that her husband woke her up, and told her something had happened, adding, "I went outside and saw police and the rangers. The fire department was here, an ambulance was here. The guy passed away, and we don't know how. He was a really nice guy."
"He was a really nice guy," Michael Boward told the outlet. "I was setting up my camper, and he came over and asked me if we needed any help, food, water."
