924-Megawatt Sunrise Wind Farm Off Shirley Coast 'Making Good Progress': Official

Twenty wind turbines have been installed in the Atlantic Ocean, as part of the project, which is slated to be complete in 2027, Orsted says.

SHIRLEY, NY — After a federal lease suspension order threw a wrench into the turbines late last year, the 924-megawatt wind farm project, Sunrise Wind, being constructed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Shirley, is making good progress, a spokeswoman for its Danish developers, Ørsted, told Patch Monday.

So far, 20 wind turbines have been installed as part of the project, which is slated for completion in the second half of 2027.

The project was set back late last year when the federal government yanked Ørsted's lease agreement, stalling construction. After some legal wrangling, the project was able to move forward earlier this year.

In February, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted the preliminary injunction sought by Sunrise Wind LLC regarding the 22 December 2025 suspension order issued by the Director of the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

The court's action will allow the project to restart impacted activities while the underlying lawsuit challenging the BOEM director's order progresses. The developers will also determine "how it may be possible to work with the federal government to achieve an expeditious and durable resolution."

Government officials previously said that the project posed a national security risk, News 12 reported.

As construction continued, safety will remain the "top priority, to deliver affordable, reliable power to the State of New York," Ørsted said.

The company previously told Patch that construction was roughly 40 percent complete, with 44 of 84 turbine foundations and its offshore substation installed.

Construction of the onshore electric infrastructure was substantially complete, according to the company.

The project was expected to begin generating power as soon as October 2026, officials previously told Patch. As of August 2026, it is not clear if that remains the case.

Once complete, the project will power nearly 600,000 homes in New York.

New York conditionally approved Sunrise Wind in 2024.
