YAPHANK, NY — Suffolk County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services officials this week are reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert, and share the road safely, as the county approaches back to school season.
"Back to school means more traffic, more pedestrians, and more school buses on the road," officials said in a news release.
They urged drivers to remember to slow down in school zones, and watch for pedestrians, as well as stop for school buses when their stop signs and red lights are activated.
Remember drivers in both directions always need to stop for a school bus, whether they are behind the bus or the oncoming driver, officials said.
Drivers should look both ways and use crosswalks when crossing the street, and prepare for extra traffic and give yourself more time for your commute, according to officials.
"A few extra seconds of caution can make a big difference in keeping our children, families, and communities safe," the release stated. "Let's make this a safe and successful school year for everyone."
