Arson Detectives Investigating Fire That Broke Out In Chicken Coop/Storage Shed In Mastic: Police

Officers found the structure engulfed in flames when they arrived, Suffolk police say.

MASTIC, NY — Arson Squad investigators are probing a fire that broke out in what is believed to have been a chicken coop/shed in the backyard of a home in Mastic early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The fire started at the Cumberland Street home at around 2 a.m., and when officers from the 7th Precinct in Shirley arrived at the scene, they found what they believed to be a chicken coop/storage shed engulfed in flames, Suffolk police said.

Mastic firefighters found the fire in the backyard, and the blaze was extinguished with the scene cleared, and all the firefighters back in service in under two hours, according to the department.

Assistant Chief Rudy Sunderman Jr. said that he could not be sure what the structure was, but no animals were found dead inside.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.

No injuries were reported.

In addition to Suffolk and Mastic, altogether, five different agencies responded, including the Brookhaven Fire Department, and Brookhaven Fire Marshal's office. The Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company stood by in case of injuries.
