Driver Dies, Man Seriously Injured In Fiery Crash: Police

A man was also seriously injured in the crash that left one driver dead, police say.

SHIRLEY, NY — A driver died and one man was seriously injured in a fiery crash in Shirley early Sunday, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the crash took place on William Floyd Parkway at Dawn Drive at 12:50 a.m.

Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are investigating the crash, which took place when a 2004 Jeep traveling south on William Floyd Parkway was struck from behind by a 2010 Toyota sedan driven by James Dontae, 29, of Shirley — the Jeep caught fire following the crash, police said.

The driver of the Jeep, who has yet to be identified by police, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner; Dontae was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

No charges have been filed at this time, police said.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
