Woman Dies After Drunk Boyfriend Crashes Car: Police

The woman's boyfriend crashed the car they were riding in at about 2 a.m., police say.

BROOKHAVEN, NY — A 40-year-old Bellport man was charged with drunken driving after he crashed the car he was driving, killing his girlfriend in Brookhaven early Saturday, Suffolk police said.

Emmanuel Rivera was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry westbound on Montauk Highway, near Old South Country Road, when the car left the road and struck a tree at about 2 a.m., according to police.

Rivera’s girlfriend, 41-year-old Arely Garcia, who lived at the same address as him, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, adding, Rivera was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue "for treatment of minor injuries and released."

Major Case Unit detectives charged Rivera with driving while intoxicated, and he will be held overnight at the 5th Precinct for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday, police said.

Rivera's vehicle was impounded for a safety check, according to police. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553.
