Furloughed Workers' Kids Eligible For Free, Reduced Meal Program

Here's how to apply for the free and reduced meal program at the school district if you're a furloughed government employee.

MASTIC BEACH, NY — As furloughed workers struggle during the partial federal government shutdown, the William Floyd School District is ensuring no children go hungry.

The district has received guidance from the New York State Education Department that furloughed federal employees are eligible to apply for the free or reduced meal program, the district said.

In order to receive free or reduced meals, families must fill out an application. Those approved will keep their free or reduced status for the remainder of the school year and a 30-day carryover into next school year, at which time families will need to re-apply should they still qualify and wish to continue the benefit, the district said.

Additionally, anyone who has not yet filled out an application for the current school year and/or whose situation has changed from the beginning of the school year, is encouraged to fill out an application.

Families with multiple children only need to fill out one application per entire family.
