SHIRLEY, NY — Construction work on the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library's main branch will not resume until the spring, pushing back the opening at least six months to late 2023 or 2024, library director Kerri Rosalia told Newsday.

The work was halted over the summer after the demolition found steel beam supports and elevator shafts were too small to adhere to the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, the outlet reported. The bulk of the problems "were not visible to us" and probably stemmed from the building's construction in 1982 and improvements that were finished 13 years after, Rosalia told Newsday, adding, "they were behind a wall,” she said.

A $22.6 million bond will fund the rebuild of the building, as well as the construction of new branches in Mastic Beach and Moriches, though those portions of the project will not be delayed and are expected to open next year, the outlet reported.
