Mastic Man Charged With Murder After Shooting: Cops

A 25-year-old Shirley man was killed in the shooting, police say.

MASTIC, NY — A Mastic man was arrested Tuesday and charged after a fatal shooting left a Shirley man dead earlier in October, police said.

Following an investigation, Malik Roberts, 22, was arrested in Brentwood at 3:47 p.m. for the shooting death of Tyrell D. Smith, 25, in East Patchogue on October 21, police said. Homicide squad detectives charged Roberts with second degree murder, police said.

Roberts, 22, was held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday, police said.

On Oct. 21, Fifth Precinct police officers responded to Taylor Avenue after a 911 caller reported a person with possible gunshot wounds outside the residence; when officers arrived, they found that Smith had been shot, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.
