MASTIC, NY — A Mastic man was found guilty after strangling an 8-month-old baby, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said.

Amar Corbin, 25, was found guilty after a jury trial of second degree strangulation and other related charges after strangling and causing injury to the infant by applying pressure to its face and chest, the DA said.

The evidence at trial established that on May 13, 2025, the child was left in Corbin’s care for the night, Tierney said.

Throughout the night, Corbin was drinking and growing agitated as he argued over the phone with his then-girlfriend, the DA said.

When the mother of the child arrived at Corbin’s apartment the next morning, she found the baby in a portable crib next to the couch where Corbin was sleeping, Tierney said.

The mother observed injuries to the baby’s face and chest and brought the child to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation and treatment, Tierney said.

The District Attorney’s Office said it was not further identifying the infant’s gender or name in order to protect the child’s identity.

When the mother confronted Corbin about the child’s injuries, Corbin offered "shifting" explanations, including claims that the baby’s injuries were self-inflicted, had been there for days, and were the result of a rash, Tierney said.

While at the hospital, the child was seen by a forensic nurse examiner, who conducted a strangulation assessment, as well as a child abuse pediatrician, who determined that the injuries had been inflicted by blunt force pressure applied to the baby’s face and chest, Tierney said.

The child sustained bruises on its cheeks consistent with the shape of a handprint, as well as broken blood vessels to the face and the upper portion of the body, the DA said.

The medical experts testified that the blood vessels ruptured from the force of the pressure applied to the infant's face and chest, the DA said.

On Monday, Corbin was convicted after a jury trial heard before Supreme Court Justice Timothy P. Mazzei, Tierney said. Charges included second-degree strangulation, a Class D violent felony; second-degree assault, a Class D violent felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor, Tierney said.

Corbin is due back in court for sentencing on July 28, and faces up to seven years in prison, the DA said.

He is being represented by Steve Fondulis, who could not immediately be reached for comment.

"Anyone who would harm an innocent child should not remain free in our community," Tierney said. "I thank the jury for their careful attention in this case, as well as our prosecutors who work tirelessly to be a voice for victims."
