YAPHANK, NY — The New York Blood Center put a desperate call out on Monday for type O donors as their supply dwindled — scheduled to run out within less than two days.

In a Facebook post, officials said, “We need type O donors ASAP,” officials said. “The supply for O [negative] and O [positive] is less than two days.”

The post ended with officials asking followers to find a location near them to make an appointment to donate “today.”

The Red Cross issued a directive about its first-ever national crisis also on Monday as the U.S.’s supply became extremely low, according to a report on CBS news.

"If the nation's blood supply does not stabilize soon, life-saving blood may not be available for some patients when it is needed," the organization told CBS, in a joint statement with America's Blood Centers and the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies.

Public safety followers soon started sharing the call out for eligible donors.

“Are you eligible to donate blood?” asked the Suffolk County Sheriff’s office.
