Officer Shoots, Kills Suicidal Man During Confrontation: Cops

BREAKING: The suicidal man was threatening himself and others with a knife, police say.

SHIRLEY, NY — A suicidal man was shot and killed by a police officer during a confrontation in Shirley Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Suffolk County Police said homicide squad detectives are investigating the police-involved shooting, which involved Seventh Precinct police officers that responded to a 911 call about a suicidal man on Rockledge Drive at 12:30 p.m.

The man, who police have not yet named, was threatening himself and others with a knife; a confrontation ensued and an officer fired his weapon and struck the man, police said.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
