Small Plane Flips Upon Landing On Long Island

SHIRLEY, NY — A small plane flipped while landing in Shirley on Sunday, officials said.

According to the Mastic Fire Department, at 4 p.m. the department was alerted for an aircraft emergency at Brookhaven Calabro Airport on Dawn Drive.

Upon arrival, Mastic Fire Chief Chief Rudy Sunderman reported a biplane that had overturned just after landing, fire officials said.

The lone pilot was out of the aircraft and uninjured, the Mastic Fire Department said.

Responding with three engines, the heavy rescue unit, and fire police, members immediately secured the plane, cut the fuel off to the engine, and mitigated a minor fuel leak, the Mastic Fire Department said.

Mastic Ambulance Company stood by at the airport; the FAA was noticed and the scene was then turned over to the Brookhaven Town fire marshal and the Suffolk County Police Department for investigation, fire officials said.
