William Floyd Robotics Wins Industrial Design Award
The team is gearing up for the LI regional competition.

The William Floyd Robotics Team #287 recently competed at the New York Tech Valley Regional in Albany against 40 other talented robotics teams from around the country and the world. Team 287’s aspiring engineers made it to the quarterfinals with a 10th place finish, and earned the Industrial Design Award in the process. The Industrial Design Award, sponsored by General Motors, is presented to the team that best demonstrates industrial design principles, striking a balance between form, function and aesthetics.

As part of the challenge, students and their mentors designed and built the robot within a six-week timeframe. The focus for this year’s challenge was to “address the global challenges related to building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization while fostering innovation.”
According to the design specifications for the 2021-22 season, First Forward presented by Qualcomm, teams were challenged with designing robots that focus on the shipment of packages in rural and urban areas, and on disaster relief delivery and high-tech air transit in an effort to better connect and grow communities and economies around the world.

The list of students participating in the New York Tech Valley Regional include: Co-captains Samantha Friedrich and Tessa-Kaya Bender (lead driver), Graciela Aguilar, Devin Brigandi, Alice Chen, Vincenzo Fantini, Max Heitman, Michael Melecio, Andrew Rae, Adam Schultzer and Keira Soika. Robotics is led by teachers Joseph Carpinone, Roxanna Casey and Christopher Orlando; mentor Jack Fried, a programmer at Brookhaven National Laboratory; volunteer and retired William Floyd teacher Christopher Ryon and parent-volunteer Phyllisa Bender.
Next up for Team #287 is the 2022 FIRST Robotics School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) Long Island Regional this weekend at Hofstra University!
