Woman Charged With DWI After Crash With Toddler, Infant: Cops
The crash took place in Shirley when a Patchogue woman crashed the car with kids, left the scene: she was charged with DWI, police say.
SHIRLEY, NY — A woman was charged with driving while intoxicated and violation of Leandra's Law after she crashed with two children in the car — and left the scene, police said.
According to Suffolk County Police, Brook Wirshup, 27, of Patchogue, was arrested Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. after the crash, which took place at the corner of Revilo Ave. and Victory Ave. in Shirley.
Wirshup was driving her 2018 Hyundai Elantra with the two children in the car when she rear-ended another vehicle on William Floyd Parkway at the intersection of Dawn Drive in Shirley at 2:45 p.m. and fled the scene, police said.

A short time later, Seventh Precinct Officer Michelle Speed saw Wirshup’s vehicle near Revilo Ave. and Victory Ave. at 3:05 p.m, police said. When Speed approached the vehicle, she saw two children, aged 3 and 17 months, in the backseat, police said.
Wirshup was charged with driving while intoxicated; aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15-years old or younger (Leandra’s Law); aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; two counts of endangering the welfare of a child; and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, police said.

She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, police said.
The children were released to the custody of a relative at the scene, police said.
