Five Tips for Crafting Effective Facebook Updates

By: Tim Fasano

Growing an audience on Facebook can be a lengthy process – building a Facebook page doesn’t guarantee “they will come.” Your posts have to be regular, engaging, and shareable if you truly want to get the most out of your presence. But now that Facebook marketing has become an industry unto itself, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel – follow these top five tips from AllFacebook, the unofficial Facebook blog, to get the most out of your spot on the world’s largest social network.

An important thing to note before implementing these status update tips is that all or most of your Facebook posts should link out to your web page, your blog, or a page that can allow your reader to learn more – whether by calling a phone number or submitting their email address. It’s not enough just to collect “likes” – you want to draw attention to the services you offer and not just your snappy social media personality.

1. Post an interesting fact
Show off your expertise by posting a little-known fact about your industry, your services, or the community you serve. More and more people are getting their news from Facebook, so if you can help them feel smarter, they’ll begin to look to you for other services as well. Posting the most interesting fact from a blog post or article on your site can also serve as encouragement for readers to click through.

2. Share a tip
People also look to Facebook for advice, so if you have a nugget to share, make sure to present it in a punchy way and call attention to the fact that it’s helpful info. This will help you stand out in the newsfeed rat race.

3. Don’t always ask a question
It’s fairly common advice for a Facebook status update to be a question to “fans” – questions are more engaging, right? Unfortunately, with so much excitement on Facebook, fans may not have the time or energy to write on your wall if they aren’t fully invested in your business. Avoid embarrassing silence by sharing content with your readers and building a fan base before you ask them to interact with your page.

4. Inspire action
Tell your fans just what you want them to do. Maybe you’ve shared a photo, and you want them to pin it to a Pinterest board. Maybe you’d like them to tweet an article your posting. Whatever the action is, make sure that it’s in some way important to getting your name out there and that it’s easy.

5. Add a P.S. to your update
Strange but true – just adding “P.S.” and a line or two at the end of your update is a quick and easy way to grab your reader’s attention. It also highlights a certain piece of information and makes sure it gets across, even with a variety of other info in the update.
