8 Suffolk Beaches Closed To Bathing
Eight beaches were shut down for swimmers on Friday due to excess bacteria. Three others remain closed.
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Eight beaches in Suffolk County have been shut down to bathing, the Suffolk County Department of Health announced on Friday.
- Corey Beach in Bayport
- Terraces on the Sound Beach in Rocky Point
- Benjamins Beach in Bay Shore
- Short Beach in Smithtown
- Nissequogue Point Beach
- Sayville Marina Park Beach
- Bayport Beach
- West Islip Beach
The beaches were closed due to high levels of bacteria.
Additionally, Valley Grove Beach in Eatons Neck, Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Lake Ronkonkoma’s Islip Town Beach remain closed.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.
