UPDATED: Smithtown Student's Coronavirus Test Not Positive

The middle schooler was wrongly reported as positive for the coronavirus due to an input error, the district said in a Monday night update.

SMITHTOWN, NY — The Accompsett Middle School student reported to have tested positive for the coronavirus does not have COVID-19, the Smithtown Central School District stated in an update on Monday night. The student was wrongly identified as positive due to an input error, says Smithtown superintendent Mark Secaur.

The community was initially notified of the now-false positive test in a letter on Sunday.

"We apologize for any confusion and/or unnecessary concern this may have caused," Secaur wrote. "We are working with our partners in the medical community to see what can be done to limit this type of error in the future. Thank you for your continued support to ensure the health and safety of our school community."

Accompsett Middle School remained open for in-person classes on Monday, according to the district.
