ST. JAMES, NY — Students in Diane Lanze's fifth grade class at Mills Pond Elementary School espoused on their heroes as part of the "American Idol" essay contest. Lanze has organized the contest for 21 years in a row.

The students were tasked with writing about their idols whom they have personally
known such as parents, siblings and grandparents.

The winner was Juliana Labropoulos, who wrote about her father.
