SMITHTOWN, NY — A brush fire that quickly spread across multiple properties near a home in Smithtown was brought under control late Monday morning, fire officials said.

Crews were alerted at around 11:39 a.m. to a brush fire in the area of Brooksite Drive that was rapidly extending, according to the Smithtown Fire Department.

Firefighters found a 50-by-50-foot area of brush burning along a fence line, with flames spreading into two additional properties.

The department said crews from Engines 2, 4, and 15, along with Brush Truck 8 and Rescue 9, stretched hose lines and worked to contain and extinguish the fire.

Police officers from the Suffolk County Police Department’s 4th Precinct used fire extinguishers before firefighters’ arrival to help slow the spread.

District EMS and Medic 81 also responded to the scene and evaluated one resident, who was treated for smoke inhalation.

Officials said dry conditions and a lack of recent rainfall continue to increase the risk of brush fires across Long Island.

“It only takes a spark to turn into a fast-moving fire,” the department said.

Fire officials reminded residents to avoid burning debris, properly dispose of cigarettes, keep outdoor flames away from dry vegetation, and fully extinguish fires.

The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
