SMITHTOWN, NY — A Smithtown High School East student was recently recognized by the Suffolk County Legislature after completing community exploration and personal-development projects as part of the county's Distinguished Youth Award program.
Louis Schmettan Jr., a 10th grader at Smithtown High School East, was the only student in Suffolk County's 13th Legislative District to receive the award, according to the Smithtown Central School District.
As part of the award requirements, Schmettan visited and journaled about 15 Suffolk County parks and completed at least 100 hours on a personal development project.
For that project, he turned his interest in writing into two novels totaling more than 350 pages.
Schmettan said he hopes to have the novels published later this year.
