Smithtown Educators Kick Off New School Year With ‘Walking On Sunshine’

SMITHTOWN, NY — Smithtown educators kicked off the new school year on an upbeat note Monday as teachers, administrators and staff gathered at Smithtown High School West for Superintendent's Conference Day.

St. James Elementary School music teacher Christa Braunreuther and fellow district music educators helped welcome employees back with a performance of "Walking on Sunshine."

Smithtown Teachers' Association President Laura Spencer opened the morning by highlighting teamwork and collaboration among district educators.

"Our success comes from our individual talent, but also from our willingness to collaborate, support one another and work together as professionals committed to a common purpose," Spencer said.

Superintendent Mark Secaur, entering his seventh year in Smithtown, thanked teachers and staff for the impact they have on students.

"We know the importance of our work," Secaur said. "We take great pride in our work and we know the impact we can have on the children in our care. It is an awesome responsibility not to be taken lightly."

Secaur also encouraged staff to continue embracing the Smithtown Promise, the district's commitment to ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Board of Education President Matt Gribbin and Vice President Brandon Solomon also welcomed staff back and recognized the time educators devote to students and families.

"We really want to commend you for everything that you do, to go above and beyond, and that really makes a difference," Gribbin said. "We know the nights, the weekends, the family time that everybody gives up — creating and planning, and that is something the Board sees, we hear and we are grateful for everybody who does that."
