SMITHTOWN, NY — One person was killed Monday after a vehicle crashed into the toll booth area at the entrance to Sunken Meadow State Park and caught fire, New York State Police said.
Troopers from SP Brentwood responded to the northern end of the Sunken Meadow State Parkway at about 11:14 a.m. for a report of a one-vehicle crash, police said.
A preliminary investigation found that the vehicle crashed into the toll booth area at the entrance to the park and became engulfed in flames, according to police.
One person was found dead inside the vehicle, police said.
Because of the extensive damage caused by the crash and fire, investigators were working Monday to determine the identity of the person killed as well as the make and model of the vehicle, police said.
Members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene. New York State Park Police, the Smithtown Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department also assisted.
The investigation remains ongoing, police said. Additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
