"I had confidence that I could get it, but it feels better to know," Tang said.

The National Merit Scholarship Program annually recognizes high school students and awards scholarships to qualifying seniors. Semifinalists are selected based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

To advance to finalist standing, semifinalists must meet additional requirements, including submitting an essay and receiving a recommendation from a high school official. Their academic record and SAT or ACT scores must also support their qualifying test performance.
