Rabid Raccoon Found At Popular LI State Park, Suffolk Officials Say (patch.com) — Residents who frequent Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park are being alerted after a raccoon found there tested positive for rabies, adding to Suffolk County's growing number of terrestrial rabies cases. While no human or pet exposures were reported, officials urge people in and around Smithtown to avoid contact with wild animals and to report any raccoons acting strangely to authorities.
   

2. Smithtown HS East Student Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist (patch.com) — Smithtown residents can celebrate as Smithtown High School East student Yuran Tang has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, a prestigious academic honor based on PSAT performance. The recognition puts a local senior in the running for significant scholarship opportunities, pending an essay, school recommendation, and strong academic record.
   

3. Town Recognizes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (lilifepolitics.com) — Smithtown Town Hall has been lit gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, with a moving ceremony honoring local children and families affected by cancer. 4. Kings Park residents oppose trucking station at closed landfill (newsday.com) — Plans for a trucking station at the former Steck and Philbin landfill on Old Northport Road have Kings Park and Smithtown residents worried about truck traffic, noise, and dust. Town officials have pushed the developer to scale back 26 variance requests, and the planning board kept the hearing open until Sept. 22 so revised plans and a full environmental review can be submitted.
   

5. New Puppy Development & Visitor Center breaks ground in Smithtown (news12.com) — A new Puppy Development & Visitor Center is now under construction in Smithtown, expanding local guide and service dog training by about 25 percent. The 30,000-square-foot facility will also welcome visitors, helping residents learn about the mission and support free services for people with disabilities, veterans, and first responders.
