1 Seriously Injured, Another Hurt In 2-Car Smithtown Crash: Police

SMITHTOWN, NY — One person was seriously injured and another suffered minor injuries in a two-car crash Thursday morning in Smithtown, Suffolk County police said.

The crash occurred on Veterans Memorial Highway at County Center Road around 6:15 a.m., police said.

Smithtown firefighters were alerted to the crash around 6:18 a.m. and arrived to find one person trapped inside a vehicle, according to the Smithtown Fire Department.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove the driver's side door and safely extricate the trapped person, the department said.

Emergency medical personnel treated several patients, including one who was in critical condition, according to the fire department's initial report.

Police later confirmed that one person was seriously injured and another suffered minor injuries. It was not immediately clear whether the seriously injured person was the individual who had been trapped inside the vehicle.

An ambulance from the East Brentwood Fire Department also responded to assist.

Smithtown firefighters operated under the command of Assistant Chief Palazzo before turning the scene over to Suffolk County police for investigation.

Police said no criminality was involved in the crash.

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating.
