SMITHTOWN, NY — The Smithtown High School East girls volleyball team rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit to defeat Half Hollow Hills West on Monday, Nov. 2, capturing its second consecutive Suffolk County Class AA championship.
The Section XI championship match was held at Suffolk County Community College's Brentwood campus, where the Bulls overcame an early deficit in the decisive fifth set to secure another county title.
After dropping the first three points of the final set, Smithtown East responded with 10 consecutive points to seize momentum.
Smithtown East coach George Alamia credited the team's leaders for stepping up when it mattered most.
"Skyla Sullivan, Brianna Cerullo really stepped up… when your leaders are playing like that, it gets everyone going," Alamia said.
For Sullivan, the championship was a reflection of the team's dedication throughout the season.
"It feels amazing," Sullivan said. "We've worked so hard for this and it really showed tonight."
The victory marked the Bulls' second straight Section XI Class AA title.
