Black Lives Matter Protesters Return To Smithtown After Clashes

SMITHTOWN, NY — Protesters supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and advocating against police brutality returned to Smithtown on Tuesday evening. The protest kicked off at 6 p.m. at the Smithtown Train Station on Redwood Lane.

At 8:30 p.m., the main protest was on Veterans Memorial Highway approaching Bill Richard Park and heading toward the Suffolk Police Department's Fourth Precinct, according to the Smithtown Department of Public Safety. The protesters also marched on Old Willets Path, Brooksite Drive and Main Street.

Video shows protesters chanting "No peace!", "Black Lives Matter!", and "No more racists!" while holding signs with messages like "Black Lives Matter," "Am I Next? #GeorgeFloyd" and "DISRUPT LONG ISLAND WHITE PRIVILEGE. NO LIVES MATTER UNTIL BLACK LIVES MATTER."

Protesters chanted "F--- Donald Trump!" followed a few minutes later by "George Floyd!" Chants of "I can't breathe!" followed. Next, chants of "Hey hey! Ho ho! Racist cops have got to go!" echoed. They then circled back to chants of "F--- Trump!"

Sunday's Smithtown march was met with many counterprotesters, a couple of whom directed racial slurs at the protesters. One young man appeared to suffer a gash to the neck after his friend wrote on Instagram they were attacked by counterprotesters armed with bats and nunchucks; an incident Suffolk police are investigating. At one point, counter-protesters chanting "USA! USA!" were met by protesters giving them the middle finger and chanting "F--- Donald Trump!" No arrests were made Sunday.

A flyer circulating Twitter for Tuesday's march called for a "peaceful protest."

Marches against police brutality have taken place throughout the country following the May 25 death of George Floyd, which four former Minneapolis police officers were charged in connection to. Ex-officer Derek Chauvin faces a second-degree murder charge.
