Brain Training Offers New Hope for Parkinson's Patients

Study shows improvement in gait and balance through neurofeedback training

Have you ever experienced muscle stiffness, shakiness or dizziness during a brief illness? For people living with Parkinson's Disease (PD), these are just some of the pervasive symptoms that make life a constant struggle for the more than 10 million people world-wide with this progressive neurodegenerative disease.

Medications are routinely used to manage some of the many symptoms of PD, but they oftentimes come with severe side effects; in addition, gait and balance issues that are common with PD are not responsive to the pharmacological approach, which increases the risk for falls and injury, and further health complications.

Recent studies have found neurofeedback therapy to be successful in improving postural stability by helping to retrain, strengthen and calm the brain. By helping to create healthy, functional brain-wave patterns, patients were able to achieve improved balance and gait in just eight sessions.

People living with Parkinson's often experience other comorbid conditions including anxiety, depression and sleep disorders. Neurofeedback has the added benefit of helping the brain to regulate mood and sleeping patterns, which helps increase quality of life for those with PD.

For more information on how to improve PD symptoms without medication, contact our office and schedule a quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) brain map to determine whether you are a candidate for the BrainCore neurofeedback training program. We're offering $50 off an initial QEEG this month. 631.265.1223.
