The Sounds of Film

John Turturro stars as a streetwise New Yorker whose traditional ways collide with a modern world of digital crime.
The Sounds of Film with Tom Needham continued its coverage of the Hamptons International Film Festival on Saturday, October 10, with coverage of THE ONLY LIVING PICKPOCKET IN NEW YORK. The New York-set crime drama brought a distinctly local character to the festival, exploring a city where old-school street smarts collide with an increasingly digital world. Written and directed by Noah Segan, the film stars John Turturro and features an ensemble cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Steve Buscemi, Tatiana Maslany and Will Price. Produced by Katie McNeill, Leopold Hughes and Ben LeClair, with Rian Johnson among the executive producers, the film is being released by Sony Pictures Classics.
Turturro stars as Harry, an aging pickpocket whose livelihood depends on his instincts, personal connections and ability to navigate New York’s streets. As the city changes, his traditional targets—cash and wristwatches—give way to credit cards and cell phones. But a particularly dangerous theft involving cryptocurrency and a handgun thrusts Harry into a fight for survival, transforming his familiar routine into a tense game of pursuit and evasion. Blending crime-thriller suspense with affection for an older New York, the film explores what happens when a resourceful street operator finds himself confronting a world increasingly shaped by technology and new forms of criminal enterprise. Turturro anchors the story as a man struggling to maintain his footing in a city that has changed around him, with Segan’s screenplay bringing together elements of suspense, nostalgia and urban storytelling.
The Sounds of Film with Tom Needham will continue its coverage of the Hamptons International Film Festival, highlighting filmmakers, performers and the stories shaping contemporary cinema. Hosted by Tom Needham, the program has spent more than 30 years exploring film, music and ideas through interviews with established artists and emerging creative voices. Past guests have included Laurie Anderson, William H. Macy, Chuck D, Carter Burwell, Nile Rodgers, Alexander Payne, Wallace Shawn, Michael Moore and Rory Kennedy. The program features conversations spanning independent cinema, documentaries, film music and the creative process. THE ONLY LIVING PICKPOCKET IN NEW YORK Brings Old-School Hustle to the Hamptons Film Festival

Oscar-winning filmmaker discusses AVEDON, PARENTHOOD, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS and HAPPY DAYS during a special conversation at Guild Hall.
The Sounds of Film with Tom Needham was on hand at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Saturday, October 10, to cover a special conversation with acclaimed filmmaker Ron Howard as part of the Hamptons International Film Festival. Held at the historic arts and cultural center on Main Street, the hour-long event offered audiences an opportunity to hear from one of Hollywood’s most accomplished storytellers about his remarkable career and creative journey. Moderated by Benjamin VanHoose, Senior News Editor for TV at People, the conversation was part of the festival’s signature series, which brings prominent actors, directors and other entertainment industry figures together for in-depth discussions about their work.
Howard reflected on a career spanning television, feature films and documentaries, including his latest documentary, AVEDON, which explores the life and legacy of celebrated photographer Richard Avedon. The conversation also touched on PARENTHOOD, his 1989 comedy-drama, and HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, his 2000 adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic, along with memories of HAPPY DAYS, the television series that helped establish him as a familiar face to audiences long before his success behind the camera. Howard’s directorial accomplishments include the Academy Award-winning A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001), the acclaimed space drama APOLLO 13 (1995), SPLASH (1984), FROST/NIXON (2008) and RUSH (2013). His documentary work includes PAVAROTTI (2019), WE FEED PEOPLE (2022) and JIM HENSON: IDEA MAN (2024), which received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary. Howard co-founded Imagine Entertainment with producer Brian Grazer in the early 1980s, building a production company responsible for an extensive range of film and television projects. He also published his memoir, The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family, in 2021. AVEDON, which premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, examines how the photographer’s influential portraits and fashion images helped shape the visual culture of the twentieth century. The documentary is scheduled for release on Netflix this fall.
The Sounds of Film with Tom Needham will continue covering the Hamptons International Film Festival, bringing listeners and readers conversations with filmmakers, actors, composers and other creative figures from the worlds of film and music. For more than 30 years, Needham has hosted the long-running program, which combines interviews, music and discussions about film and ideas. Past guests have included Laurie Anderson, composer Howard Shore, Carter Burwell, director Alexander Payne, playwright and actor Wallace Shawn, filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Nile Rodgers, Philip Glass music director Michael Riesman and director Amy Nicholson. The program also features conversations with emerging filmmakers and established artists whose work explores the intersection of music, cinema and culture. Ron Howard Reflects on an Extraordinary Career at the Hamptons International Film Festival

The acclaimed actor was honored at Guild Hall during a special screening of Christopher Guest’s comedy classic BEST IN SHOW.
The Sounds of Film with Tom Needham continued its coverage of the Hamptons International Film Festival on Sunday, October 11, at Guild Hall in East Hampton, where actor Bryan Cranston presented Bob Balaban with the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award during a special screening of BEST IN SHOW. Sponsored by UBS, the event celebrated Balaban’s extensive contributions to film and television over a career spanning six decades. The screening brought audiences together to revisit Christopher Guest’s beloved comedy, which follows an eccentric collection of dog owners competing in a prestigious canine show. Balaban appeared in the film as Theodore W. Millbank III, the wealthy benefactor financing one of the competing dogs, in a memorable ensemble that also included Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey and Jennifer Coolidge.
Cranston, best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Walter White in BREAKING BAD and his earlier role as Hal in MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, presented the honor to Balaban, an actor, director, producer and writer whose work has made him a familiar presence in American cinema. Balaban’s screen credits include Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction landmark CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, Robert Altman’s GOSFORD PARK, Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM and Christopher Guest’s BEST IN SHOW and FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. Beyond comedy, he has appeared in a wide range of dramatic films and television productions, demonstrating an ability to move comfortably between independent cinema and major studio projects. His work behind the camera includes directing BERNARD AND DORIS, THE EXONERATED and GEORGIA O’KEEFFE. His feature THE LAST GOOD TIME received the Hamptons International Film Festival Audience Award in 1994. Balaban has also written books about the making of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and created children’s book series, adding authorship to an already diverse career. A longtime East End resident and member of the HamptonsFilm Board, he has maintained a connection to the community that celebrated his achievements with this special recognition.
The Sounds of Film with Tom Needham will continue its ongoing coverage of the Hamptons International Film Festival, bringing audiences interviews and stories about the filmmakers, actors, musicians and creative minds behind the work appearing on screen. Hosted by Tom Needham, the program explores the intersection of film, music and ideas through conversations with established artists and emerging talents. The long-running radio show has aired for more than 30 years, while its podcast features new interviews alongside memorable conversations from the program’s extensive archive. Past guests have included Laurie Anderson, William H. Macy, Chuck D, Carter Burwell, Nile Rodgers, Billy Joel, Michael Moore, Wallace Shawn and Rory Kennedy.
